The Beat Generation in various forms
This catalogue has excellent photographs that gives one a sense of the attitude of the Beat Generation. Everyone is familiar with the writers of the period, but not everyone knows about art generated during those years. This catalogue gives a review of art, film, and writing being created at the time. Not only that but it devotes a chapter to women and a chapter to minorites working during the time period. A good source of information for anyone interested in the 1950's to the early 1960's.

Blackrobe in Blue: The Naval Chaplaincy of John P. Foley, S.J. 1942
Published in Paperback by Writers Club Press (May, 2002)
Author: Steve O'Brien
Average review score:

Scholarly and enjoyable!
This recent book provides a fascinating account of an important World War II subject about which, until now, there has been a dearth of information among the plethora of writings on that conflict. The military chaplaincy played a significant an influential role during the war and such is reflected in this account of a Jesuit chaplain.

The story of John P. Foley is not another WW II memoir written either too soon after the conflict to provide historical perspective, or long after relying on faded memories. Rather, it is predicated on a detailed war diary of a well-educated priest and Naval officer. The author uses the diary accompanied by interviews with the subject as a basis for the book. He has however, the academic background to relate the story in relevant historical terms and offers analysis in this regard. Dr. O'Brien manages the difficult task of balancing a scholarly endeavor with an enjoyable read.

This work is a history book more so than a religious one. It is about a very important part of naval life in a combat theatre. It is not a sugar-coated version. The author pulls no punches about the realities of life at the time, including serious conflict between the chaplain and senior officers.

It seems today that subjects with any sort of religious connotation are politically incorrect however, during the war religion had a significant influence. Any study of "the greatest generation" would be left wanting without an understanding of the historical and social impact men like Father Foley had on those who fought the war.

The Writing Process for Young Children Made Easy
If you teach writing for young children, this book is a must! I shared it in a writing class I was teaching and everyone wanted to purchase their own copy. It has great ideas for writing and making books, but the best part is the way the writing process is presented. As teachers of writing we sometimes struggle to make clear the differences in revision and editing for young children. This book gives terrific teaching strategies for being successful. It's a must for the teacher of young children (Grades K-3).

British Brutality in Ireland
Published in Paperback by Irish Amer Book Co (December, 1989)
Author: Jack O'Brien
Average review score:

Excellent and Accurate account of Irish History
I was very impressed by Jack O'Briens book British Brutality in Ireland. The facts have been well researched and well presented. The book draws on eye witness accounts, historical documents, ancient archives, personal testimonies and thorough historical research by both catholic and protestant historians. He describes the British involvement in Ireland from 1169 to the present day. It gives eye witness accounts of the terrible cruelties and injustices inflicted on the Irish people over many centuries. He describes how all of this was covered up and hidden by British propaganda. The book also shows up the serious flaws in the British criminal justice system which are a disgrace to Britain which prides itself as a modern so called "democratic nation". I learnt quite a lot about Ireland and my Irish ancestors. If you have any Irish ancestry you will learn the terrible truth about what happened to your Irish ancestors in this book. The book is a historical masterpiece. If you want to understand present circumstances in Ireland and Irish history, Jack O'Brien's historical masterpiece has to be read.

But the Gates Were Shut
Published in Textbook Binding by International Scholars Publications (01 January, 1996)
Author: Kevin O'Brien
Average review score:

A groundbreaking study of redating the last week of Jesus.
Father O'Brien has done a major two volume study of the last week of the life of Jesus (Passion Week). The two volumes set out to prove locations and dates in light of what we know of the daily life of Roman Jerusalem. Among the fascinating bits are a study of the sealing of the city by both Roman and Temple personnel on the Sabbath: this changes where and when the trial of Christ took place. Also included is a very believable discussion of where the trial took place and who was there (hint: think rabbinic students). Recommended highly
